Lethwei’s Little Mike Tyson

Little Mike (Maung Kyue) was an energetic, young up and coming fighter who was a crowd favorite. He definitely won me over when he took on two rough matches back to back the day I met him in Yangon. I always enjoyed watching him fight. He had such enthusiasm and drive to fight hard and fight well. I didn’t give him the nickname Little Mike Tyson or Little Mike as they were already calling him that. I do give people nicknames so I can remember them quickly but it wasn’t me this time that blessed him with his nickname.

I added a very short interview we did with him after his second fight. A young Saya Methar Lay is the referee for the bout.

This footage is from one of the darker periods in Lethwei’s history beginning in 1999 when the country was completely locked down by a military dictatorship. Many of the fights were not recorded during this period, and if they were, loud sound effects and horrible slow motion were added in making them hard to digest for a Western audience.

Little Mike’s second bout is featured in its entirety on the Born Warriors (Disc One) Bouts from the Archives bonus feature.
